An Introduction to Harp Therapy

Harp therapy is a relatively new field of research and practice which explores the beneficial effects of the timbre of the harp. The harp, with its soothing timbre and spiritual associations, has been revered as a healing instrument by many cultures for thousands of years. Harp therapy is a general term used to describe the continuum of types of therapies in which the harp is used. It may be provided at home or in a clinical setting. When therapeutic harp music is played, recipients may receive beneficial effects such as increased relaxation, improvement in sleep, decreased pain and anxiety, stabilization of vital signs, and improvement in mood. An end-of-life music vigil can also help a patient to achieve a peaceful transition. 

Sarajane Williams, M.A., licensed psychologist, co-founder of PlanetHarp.com is a professional harpist, harp teacher, composer, author of The Mythic Harp and Good Vibrations: Principles of Vibroacoustic Harp Therapy and editor of The Harp Therapy Journal. She has over 30 years of experience in various roles in the healing arts including: nurse, cardiopulmonary technologist, director of a cardiac catheterization laboratory and biofeedback therapist in a chronic pain center.

Williams was the first person to document the use of an acoustic instrument in conjunction with vibroacoustic therapy (VAT), thereby pioneering a new approach called vibroacoustic harp therapy (VAHT).

Since 1991, she has been using her harp in her psychology practice, now located in Macungie, Pa., to provide vibroacoustic harp therapy for clients who suffer from a variety of conditions including chronic pain, stress, anxiety and depression. Her seminal article “Harp Therapy: A Psychoacoustic Approach to Treating Pain and Stress,” appeared in the winter 1993 issue of The American Harp Journal (vol.14, no. 2).

In November 1995, Ms. Williams organized and hosted The First International Healing Harps Symposium in Allentown, Pa. This was the first successful formal gathering to link harpists and practitioners from various disciplines to investigate the healing attributes of the harp and its music.

In 1996, publication of The Harp Therapy Journal began and it became the international networking vehicle and investigational journal for all those interested in the therapeutic value of harp music. Williams also offers a VAHT training course.

Music Instruction

Planet Harp offers harp and classical guitar lessons at their showroom and studios near Macungie, PA. Under the direction of Sarajane and Ted Williams, students of all levels and ages can enjoy the benefits of expert musical instruction.

Sarajane Williams, a nurse and licensed psychologist, graduated from Cedar Crest College and Kutztown University. She studied the harp for 15 years with Dorothy Knauss (a student of Marcel Grandjany and Alfred Holy). Her numerous public appearances have included concerts at MusikFest and FirstNight in Bethlehem, PA with her husband Ted in the Williams Duo; and a performance of her own compositions in Galway, Ireland to promote her CD In Brigit's Garden.  In addition to the standard classical repertoire, Sarajane also performs traditional Celtic harp music and popular standards. Her music has been published by Mel Bay Publications. Recognized as an authority in the field of harp therapy, Sarajane has authored several books on the subject, and has recorded and produced numerous CDs and DVDs. She is editor of The Harp Therapy Journal which is starting its 15th year in print, and she is a frequent guest lecturer for harp therapy training programs, and also is founder of the Vibroacoustic Harp Therapy Training Course. Several of Sarajane's students have won regional and national harp competitions.

Ted Williams, a classical guitar concert artist, is a former music faculty member at Temple University, Muhlenburg College, Moravian College, and Lafayette College; and a former executive board member of the New York City Classical Guitar Society. Ted studied at the Philadelphia Music Academy and privately with numerous guitar teachers. Ted has taught students of all ages during some 40 years of teaching guitar, and is equally effective teaching children as well as adults. He has helped students gain admission to music colleges, and many of Ted's students have gone on to become professional guitarists. Beginners, and advanced players are welcome to apply.
